Scotland vs Netherlands
International Friendly Match
Date: Thursday, 9th November 2017
Kick-off at 20:45 CET
Venue: Pittodrie Stadium. Aberdeen

It is a fresh start for Scotland as they took on a vastly improved Netherlands side under the tutelage of Dick Advocaat.

Scotland had a rampant run at the end of the World Cup qualification campaign and narrowly missed out on the play-off with the 2-2 draw against Slovenia on the final match-day. They finished with a five match unbeaten streak and produced some memorable comebacks during the course.

Just short after the exit, the team part way with the long standing manager Gordon Strachan. A permanent replacement is not in place yet and the team’s performance manager Malky Mackay will take on as an interim manager for the match against the Netherlands.

Mackay named a highly inexperienced squad for this friendly in Aberdeen. Only 7 players had played more than 10 games and another 10 is yet to make their debut for the national team.

The Netherlands on the other hand are an improved side under Dick Advocaat. The team finished the qualifying campaign with 4 wins from the last five, losing the other. However, the damage was done prior to his appointment on May 2017 and the Ducth eventually finished third in the group after losing the play-off spot to second placed Sweden on goal-difference.

It is also the start of life for Netherlands with their experienced campaigner Arjen Robben, who hung up his boots after scoring both goals in the 2-0 win against Sweden in their final qualifying game.

Scotland vs Netherlands: Head-to-head

This is their first meeting since 2009, a gap of 8 years since they met in a World Cup qualification match at the Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Netherlands had won their last three meetings with Scotland by keeping clean sheets.

Interestingly, the team playing away had won just once in the 7 meetings between them and it was when Netherlands won at the Hampden Park in 2009. It was also the first time an away team have scored in their duels during the period.

Scotland vs Netherlands: Predictions

Unarguably, Netherlands are a much improved side under Advocaat. With the pressure off their back, they are expected to play with much more freedom on Thursday.

Scotland’s problem is an inexperienced squad and the current crop of players had hardly played with each other. Therefore, the visitors are expected to continues to their good run of form with a win on Thursday night.
